Summary
Academic administrator Frank Jones was born on November 9, 1928 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Jones graduated with his B.A. degree from Harvard College in 1950. After serving in the military and working at a bank, he attended Harvard Business School, receiving his M.B.A. degree in 1957. Jones was hired as a marketing manager executive for Scott Paper Company. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) president Howard W. Johnson asked Jones to serve as assistant president of the school. Jones declined, but accepted an offer to become assistant director of the Urban Systems Laboratory at MIT. He was named Ford Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning in 1970, becoming the first African American tenured professor at MIT. In addition to teaching civil engineering at MIT, Jones also directed the Whitney Young Program and advocated for the founding of MIT's Office of Minority Education. In 1992, Jones retired and became professor emeritus at MIT.
