- Summary
- Mayor Michael Nutter was born on June 29, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nutter attended St. Joseph's Preparatory School and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning his B.A. degree in business administration in 1979. Nutter began his political career in 1983, at age twenty-six, working for Philadelphia Councilman John Anderson. After serving as Democratic committee person and ward leader, Nutter was elected as the Fourth District Councilman in 1991, unseating longtime Councilwoman Ann Land. As councilman, Nutter created an independent ethics board and passed the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law. In 2007, after fifteen years as the Fourth District Councilman, Nutter became the third African American mayor in Philadelphia's history succeeding former mayor John Street. Nutter significantly reduced crime and homicide rates and raised high school graduation rates. Nutter was re-elected to a second term in 2011 and sworn into office on January 2, 2012.
