- Hip Hop artist Darryl "DMC" McDaniels was born on May 31, 1964 in Harlem, New York. In 1982, McDaniels formed "Run DMC" with group mates Joseph "Rev Run" Simmons and Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell, with Russell Simmons acting as manager. The group's first music video, "Rock Box", was one of the first rap songs to air on MTV in 1984. Run DMC released the "King of Rock" album in 1985, and shortly after, became the second rap group to appear on American Bandstand. Run DMC's "Raising Hell" album, released in 1986, was critically acclaimed and reached certified triple platinum status. It featured "Walk This Way", an extremely popular cover of the 1975 Aerosmith song by the same name. Run DMC was the first rap group to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and in 2009, the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
