- Summary
- Nonprofit executive Geoffrey Canada was born on January 13, 1952 in South Bronx, New York. In 1974, he earned his B.A. degree in psychology and sociology from Bowdoin College in Ohio; and his M.S. degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1975. In 1983, Canada became program director of the Truancy Prevention Program, and the education director at the Rheedlen Center for Children and Families. He was promoted to president and chief executive officer of the Center in 1990. Under his leadership, Rheedlen launched the Harlem Children's Zone initiative. The initiative followed the academic careers of youths in a 24-block-area of Harlem, and instituted programs that assisted them from kindergarten to college. The Rheedlen Center changed its name to Harlem Children's Zone in 2002, and directed the focus of all of its programs to this initiative. Harlem Children's Zone opened its first charter school in 2004.
