- Politician David Dinkins was born on July 10, 1927, and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, until his family moved to Harlem, New York. After receiving his B.S. degree in mathematics from Howard University in 1950, Dinkins graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1956. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1966, becoming president of the New York City Board of Elections in 1975, and president of the borough of Manhattan in 1985. In 1989, he was elected as the first African American Mayor of New York City. In 1999, he was arrested with others while protesting the shooting of Amadou Diallo. Upon leaving office in 1993, Dinkins went on to serve as professor in the Practice of Public Affairs at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs. In 2003, the David N. Dinkins Professorship Chair in the Practice of Urban & Public Affairs was established at Columbia University. His memoir, A Mayor's Life: Governing New York's Gorgeous Mosaic, was published in 2013.
