Summary
Politician Wilma Webb was born in Denver May 17, 1943. She married Wellington Webb, who would become Denver's first African American mayor, in 1969. She became a Democratic committeewoman in 1973, and a member of the Colorado Legislature in 1980. She fought for Colorado to adopt the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, finally succeeding in 1984. In 1991, Wellington Webb became the first African American mayor of Denver and, from that point, Wilma Webb worked tirelessly on anti-drug abuse programs, family issues and promotion of the arts. In 1998, Webb became the first woman to serve in the U.S. Department of Labor representing Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. Webb obtained a graduate degree from the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government, and was a Colorado state representative for thirteen years.
