Summary
Lawyer and politician Dianne Wilkerson was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on May 2, 1955. After moving north with her family to avoid persecution at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan, Wilkerson earned her B.S. degree in public administration from the American International College in 1978, and her J.D. degree from Boston College in 1981. After working as an attorney and serving as assistant legal counsel to then-governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, Wilkerson made history by becoming the first African American woman to become a partner in a major Boston law firm in 1987. In 1992, Wilkerson later made history again when she became the first African American woman to be elected to the Massachusetts State Senate. Wilkerson, while in her sixth term, where she worked to ensure that historically underrepresented peoples had their voices heard.
