- Summary
- City administrator Chuck Turner was born in Cincinnati in 1941. Turner earned his B.A. degree in government from Harvard University in 1963. After college, he reported for The Afro-American Newspaper. In 1966, he joined the South End Neighborhood Action Program (SNAP) as a community organizer. A former leader of the United Community Construction Workers and one-time chair of the Boston Jobs Coalition, Turner spent several years crusading against job discrimination in the city. Unsatisfied with the mayor's enforcement of fair employment practices, Turner led a four-hour sit-in at the mayor's office in 1991, resulting in many key concessions. Referred to as one of the best-known agitators in the city, Turner continued his progressive and strident defense of civil and human rights. He was elected to the Boston City Council in 1999. In 2010, he was found guilty of corruption, expelled from the city council, sentenced to prison in 2011. He was released in 2013.
