Summary
Government appointee and minister Reverend Suzan Johnson Cook was born on January 28, 1957, in New York City. She attended Fisk University and transferred to Emerson College in Boston where she earned her B. S. degree in speech in 1976; her M. A. degree in education from Columbia University in New York City; and her M. Div. degree (1983) and her D. Min. in (1990) from Union Theological Seminary. She also completed Harvard University's President's Administrative Fellows Program. In 1983, Cook was appointed pastor of the Mariner's Temple Baptist Church in lower Manhattan, becoming the first African American woman to be named pastor by the American Baptist Association. In 1990, New York City Mayor David Dinkins appointed Cook as the first women chaplain to the New York Police Department. In 1996, she became founder and senior pastor of the Bronx Fellowship Christian Church. From 2011 to 2013, she served as United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.
