Summary
Community leader and gynecologist Dr. Josephine English was born on December 17, 1921, in Ontario, Virginia and raised in Englewood, New Jersey. She earned her B.A. degree from Hunter College in 1939, her M.A. degree from New York University and her M.D. degree from Meharry Medical School in 1949, where she specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. In 1956, she moved to Brooklyn, and in 1958, she opened a women's clinic. In 1979, she established the Adelphi Medical Center and then expanded it to include a senior citizen's center, a day care center and an after school program. In 1982, English purchased a deserted church nearby and converted it into Brooklyn's Paul Robeson Theater. Though she faced a variety of challenges, the Brooklyn community continued to stand by her and her work. English was honored with many awards during her lifetime.
