Summary
Civil rights activist and pastor Reverend Calvin Wallace Woods, Sr. was born on September 13, 1933, in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1956, Woods joined Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and his brother Reverend Abraham L. Woods, Jr., co-founding the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR). They organized boycotts against bus segregation, pushed for integration in Birmingham Public Schools and participated in the Freedom Rides of 1961. In 1959, Woods was arrested and convicted for advocating boycotts of Birmingham's segregated city bus system to his East End Baptist Church parishioners. An appeal was granted and the sentence was overturned. Woods was arrested again and beaten by police for his participation in public civil rights protests in 1963. In 2006, Woods succeeded his brother as President of the Birmingham Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and was the Pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Birmingham, a church once pastured by his father.
