- Chemist and professor Billy Joe Evans was born on August 18, 1942, in Macon, Georgia. Evans grew up during the 1950s. In 1959, he graduated from Ballard High School, the largest high school in Macon, Georgia. Evans went on to earn his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1968. Evans' Ph.D. thesis focused on solid state chemistry, specifically the synthesis and characterization of crystal or chemical structures properties that directly affect the quality of human environments. The University of Michigan hired him as an assistant professor in 1970, and in 1986 Evans was promoted to full professor. He also held positions at Atlanta University and Howard University. Evans' academic honors include the Manufacturing Chemists Association Catalysts Award, membership in the American Chemical Society Camille and Henry Dreyfus Award and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics.
