- Summary
- Politician Kenneth Gibson was born on May 15, 1932 in Enterprise, Alabama. He received his B.S. degree in structural engineering in 1962 from Newark College of Engineering, and worked as an engineer for the New Jersey Highway Department. In 1960, he became a senior engineer for the Newark Housing Authority, and was promoted to Structural Engineer for the City of Newark in 1966. Gibson mounted his first campaign for mayor of Newark that same year, but was not elected until he ran again in 1970, becoming the first African American mayor of a major Northeastern city. Gibson served four consecutive terms as Mayor of Newark, focusing on alleviating crime, improving public health, balancing the city's budget and providing greater representation for minorities in municipal positions. In 1976, Gibson was elected president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He ran unsuccessfully for governor of New Jersey in 1981 and 1985.
