I borrowed optimism from the past markiert einen Wendepunkt in Sonja Gangls Schaffen: Die österreichische Künstlerin, vornehmlich für eine konsequente Hinterfragung des Mediums Zeichnungen bekannt, präsentiert in ihrer Ausstellung einen neuen Werkszyklus aus grossformatigen Gemälden. Mit den "Supra-Linien" (2019/20) vollzieht Gangl erstmals den Schritt aus der figurativen Darstellung ins Feld der Abstraktion und referenziert konzeptuell auf den Optimismus des amerikanischen Abstrakten Expressionismus der 1960er-Jahre. Der Katalog fokussiert neben dieser neuen Reihe auch die anderen zahlreichen eigens für die Ausstellung entstandenen Neuproduktionen.
