• "Dutch artist Berend Strik explores the relationship between the creative space and aesthetic concepts, as seen through the studios of international contemporary artists. His project began at the Manhattan studio of Marcel Duchamp, an architectural space whose use has changed over time but where memories still linger. Over the years this first visit was followed by many others, including the studios of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, of John Baldessari, Martha Rosler and Henry Taylor, the performative space of Melati Suryodarmo and the conceptual spaces of James Lee Byars. Strik photographs these places, enlarges the results and prints them before he starts to work on their surfaces by stitching, adding coloured and tactile fabric to highlight those portions of the images that are important to him. He appropriates the subject matter from the artist, transforms its reality. Through his layering he adds information, gives the subject his personal interpretation and makes the work his own. His questions revolve around the myth of the studio, the historically privileged space of artistic creativity and the impossible promise of a view into the artist's mind. • In zijn project 'Deciphering the Artist's Mind' verkent de Nederlandse kunstenaar Berend Strik (geb. 1963) de relatie tussen de creatieve ruimte en de esthetische concepten zoals die in de ateliers van internationale hedendaagse kunstenaars worden benaderd. Het project begon in Marcel Duchamps atelier in Manhattan, een architecturale ruimte waarvan het gebruik in de loop der jaren is gewijzigd maar waar de herinneringen levendig blijven. Nadien bezocht Strik ook de ateliers van onder anderen Jackson Pollock en Lee Krasner, die van John Baldessari, Martha Rosler en Henry Taylor, de performatieve ruimte van Melati Suryodarmo en de conceptuele ruimten van James Lee Byars en Tino Sehgal. Strik fotografeert deze ruimten, vergroot ze en drukt ze af voordat hij het oppervlak bestikt en er kleuren en tactiele stoffen aan toevoegt, om die delen van het beeld te bandedrukken die voor hem belangrijk zijn. Hij legt beslag op het onderwerp van de kunstenaar en vervormt de realiteit ervan. Door nieuwe lagen aan te brengen, voegt hij informatie toe, levert hij een persoonlijke interpretatie en eigent hij zich de werken toe. Zo onderzoekt hij de mythe van het atelier, de historisch bevoorrechte ruimte voor artistieke creativiteit en de onmogelijke belofte van een blik in de geest van de kunstenaar. Dit rijk geïllustreerde boek, dat is vormgegeven door Irma Boom, brengt een gedetailleerd overzicht van zijn hele oeuvre, aangevuld met teksten die Strik in samenwerking met Marja Bloem schreef, de neerslag van zijn ontmoetingen en gesprekken met de kunstenaars. De structuur van het boek laat de lezer nieuwe verbanden in het werk van Berend Strik ontdekken en onthult een persoonlijke kijk en reflectie op kunst, architectuur en fotografie. Marja Bloem is freelance curator. Meer dan 30 jaar lang was ze conservator aan het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, en ze is thans directeur van de Stichting Egress Foundation.
