Summary
  • Collection consists of studio portraits and candid shots of African American men, women and children, from about the late nineteenth century to the early 1960s. The relationship between Longmire and the individuals depicted is not established, nor is Longmire identified in the collection. Some individuals are depicted more than once. Individuals appear to be of working class and middle class backgrounds, and possibly residing in the New York City area and the Mid-Atlantic states.
  • The 19th century collection of tintypes (ca. 1870s to 1890s), a carte-de-visite (ca. 1880s) and a cabinet card (ca. 1890s) consists of studio portraits of individual men, women, young adults, and small children, and couples. Portraits from the 20th century consist of studio portraits (ca. 1900-1940s), and candid shots, many of which are snapshots (1920s to 1962). Of note is a group portrait (ca. 1920) of six unidentified young men, four of whom are in military attire; and a studio portrait (ca. 1910s) of a couple who are attired in their work clothes. Also included is a photomechanical print of singer Florence Mills, probably issued at the time of her death (ca. 1927).
