- Summary
- The collection primarily depicts events and public relations activities sponsored or organized by North General Hospital, in Harlem, New York City, from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. The collection consists of studio portraits of hospital administrators; group portraits of hospital staff, administrators, political and civic figures, and celebrities; and views of visiting dignitaries, exteriors of hospital buildings, construction projects, ceremonies, press conferences, exhibitions, a health fair, banquets and parties. Depictions of the hospital's health care services are very limited.
- Of note are views of New York Governor Mario Cuomo's visits to the hospital (1988-early 1990s); views of a press conference for a North General health initiative, "Assignment Good Health," at New York City Hall (1990); a community service awards presentation held at New York University's Robert F. Wagner's Graduate School of Public Service (1992); and views of the planning, construction and moving into North General's new facilities at Madison Avenue and East 121st Street (1989-1991). Among the individuals depicted are Eugene L. McCabe, the founder and President of North General Hospital; Randolph Guggenheimer, Chairman of the Board, North General Hospital

Founded in 1979 to replace the Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD), which moved downtown to East 17th Street, North General was the only minority-run, voluntary teaching hospital in the State of New York. North General was also the only private hospital in Harlem. After 31 years, the financially troubled North General Hospital filed for bankrupcy and closed in 2010.
