- Summary
- Depictions of young boys and young men from the African American and Latino communities in New York City training and competing as amateur boxers, from 1980-1983. Collection consists of candid shots and portraits of pre-adolescent boxers at neighborhood boxing gyms in Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn; candid shots and portraits of young adult boxers in training and participating in amateur boxing championships; a portrait of a young boxer and his trainer; views of boxers with family members; a portrait of an unidentified former boxer or trainer; and abstracted views of boxers working out. Of note is a portrait of future Olympic gold medalist and WBA welterweight boxing champion Mark Breland (1981).

- Martine Barrat, born in 1943 in Oran, Algeria, is a French photographer and filmmaker. Raised in Paris, she moved to New York in 1968 and began doing video documentaries in Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, depicting the lives of jazz musicians (1968-1972) and South Bronx street gangs (1973-1977). In 1977, she began doing photography, documenting boxing and gambling clubs, as well as doing portraits of African American musicians, seniors and children. She has also done video and photography work for fashion ad campaigns and music industry publicity.
