- Summary
- Collection depicts prominent individuals, mostly African American, as well as views of student instruction at the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama, from the mid-1910s to the 1920s. Collection consists of studio portraits of educators, social activists, writers and songwriters; and views of students in carpentry, agricultural, crafts and homemaking classes. Notable individuals include Tuskegee officials Booker T. Washington and Robert R. Morton; Thomas Jesse Jones of the Phelps-Stokes Fund; social activists W.E.B. DuBois and Frederick Douglass; songwriters J. Rosamond Johnson and Bob Cole; and poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar.
- Images of Morton, Douglass and DuBois are postcards probably issued as part of the "Our Heroes of Destiny" series. Also included are studio portraits of Battey's wife, and a view, possibly of relatives, on the porch of a house.
