Summary
Depictions of individuals and events compiled by Robert S. Brown during his tenure as head of the Black Economic Research Center, mainly during the 1970s. Browne is shown in group portraits with unidentified men (ca. 1969), and with Harlem business leaders and visiting Japanese businessman and philanthropist Ryōichi Sasakawa (1979). Also included are views of Sasakawa visiting sites and a classroom in Harlem, New York City (1979); a candid shot of cartoonist Brumsic Brandon (ca. 1972); candid shots of Rev. Lucius Walker, Jr., head of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (1972); and a group portrait showing businessman Leroy Tombs, signing a multi-million dollar contract with Greyhound Support Services, in Phoenix, Arizona (1975).

  • Robert Span Browne (1924-2004) was an economist, foreign aid administrator and political activist. He was noted for his opposition to American armed intervention in Vietnam that grew from his experience as an economic development administrator in Southeast Asia (1955-1961); and for his advocacy of financial investment into the African American community to encourage educational and economic development.
