Summary

Collection depicts bantustan "homeland" and squatter camp living conditions, public demonstrations, and police activities in apartheid-era South Africa, from 1987 to 1990. Collection consists of candid shots and views of residents, dwellings and living conditions in the Welbedacht squatter camp, near Durban, and the camps outside Port Elizabeth (1987); views of the site of the 1985 Langa massacre, and the cemetery and the damaged monument to the massacre victims (1987); candid shots and views of residents and dwellings at a resettlement camp in the Ciskei bantustan and a black laborer settlement on a white farm in the KwaZulu bantustan (1990); views of anti-apartheid demonstrations held in Durban and Cape Town (September 1989); and views of South African riot police using water cannons, tear gas and shotguns against protesters in downtown Cape Town and in the "colored" townships near Cape Town (1989).
