- Summary
- Collection mostly depicts the activities of union officials and members of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), notably leader A. Philip Randolph, from the 1930s to the 1980s. The collection consists of views of speakers and officials at union gatherings; views of participants in union parades; views of BSCP officials at a commencement and an awards banquet; and group portraits used to promote civil rights gatherings. Also included are candid shots of an unidentified man (1955); a studio portrait of a child; a view of a memorial (1928); and a photographic reproduction of a document. Of note are views of BSCP members and supporters gathering and marching down Seventh Avenue possibly during two separate parades, in Harlem, New York, (ca.1940); and a group portrait showing Randolph with former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and singer Muriel Smith, to promote a civil rights rally to be held at Madison Square Garden, New York City (1956). Other BSCP officials depicted are Benjamin F. McLaurin, Ashley Totten and William Bowe.
