Depicts activities of West Indian and Haitian residents of Brooklyn, New York, in 2003 to 2004, consisting of a view of congregants ringing bells during a service at the Yoruba Orisha Spiritual Baptist Church (2003); a candid shot of zoot suit-attired men during the J'Ouvert procession that preceded the West Indian American Day Carnival parade (2003); a candid shot of a West Indian wedding couple (2004); a view of teams of young West Indian women playing netball on an outdoor court (2004); and a view of a Haitian supporter of ousted Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide during a pro-Aristide march (2004).

  • Genie Austin is a photographer and teacher originally born and raised in Barbados. After moving to the United States, Austin documented the experiences of the West Indian community living in Brooklyn, New York, during the mid-2000s. She completed her MFA in Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts (2004), and subsequently moved to London where she received certificates in Adult Education (University of Westminster) and Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (Centre for Coaching). Austin has produced street photography, and has taught at colleges, prisons, community centers and museums in both New York and London.
