Summary
Depicts the daily lives of Black sugarcane field workers and their families in the French overseas department of Martinique, in 1992, consisting of candid shots and views of adults washing clothes, preparing meals at home, and relaxing after work; children at play; adolescents eating sugarcane; and workers cutting, gathering, loading and transporting sugarcane stalks.

  • Philippe Bourgade is a photographer from the Caribbean island of Martinique, who has documented the people, their daily lives, and the environment of rural Martinique since the 1980s. He is also a portrait and landscape photographer, and has done work for dance and theatrical productions. Bourgade has also had his work featured in two published books, "Où a-t-on pris que la nuit tombe?" (1995) and "Eau-mémoire = Memory water" (2006).
