- Summary
- Depicts the African American residents of a poor neighborhood located near the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., that were produced for the Office of War Information in 1943. Images consist of candid shots of a young boy playing in an alley, a pair of children sitting on a wood pile, and an adult showing the money that he's just won; views of residents in front of their dilapidated wooden dwellings; and views of children viewing a civilian defense workers parade.

- Esther Bubley (1921-1998) was an American freelance photographer whose work depicted the lives of ordinary people. Much of her work documented medical, mental health and child welfare programs, that included assignments for the Children's Bureau (1947), the Ladies' Home Journal (1949) and UNICEF (1953), as well as commercial assignments for Pepsi-Cola International (1956) and Pan American World Airways (mid-1960s). Bubley was the first woman to win first prize in the Photography Magazine, international division (1954). In the 1960s, she began working on more personal projects, including children's books and a book about macrophotography of plants. Bubley died in New York City in 1998.
