Throughout her work produced during the 1980s, including her early photographic series "Auntie Lindie's House" (1987), Walker's images of individuals and objects explored the hidden meanings of photographic images that are otherwise accepted as realistic depictions of the subject. Since the 1990s, Walker has done a series of self-portraits, in which she dons wigs, jewelry and make-up, where she challenges traditional representations of black women and self indentification.
