Summary
Depictions primarily of women, children, and music performers of African descent, in New York City, during the early to mid-1960s and the mid-1970s. The collection consists of undated candid shots of individual women standing in public spaces, riding mass transit, taking a dance class, and socializing; young girls and boys playing along sidewalks (1963); and a mother holding her young child. Music performers consist of views of singer Josephine Baker at the Palace Theatre (1973) and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie at an unidentified location (1977); and candid shots of pianists Walter Bishop, Jr. and Horace Silver at outdoor concerts (1977). Also depicted are non-African diaspora people, consisting of candid shots of a young girl in a dance class, a seated woman conversing, a boy posing against a wall, and a French nun praying (1964); as well as a view of museum patrons (1963).
