- Summary
- Depictions of African American personalities and lesser-known individuals from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s, consisting of some individual studio portraits and candid shots of prominent figures; group portraits of civil rights activists; and views of a civil rights gathering, a womens' organizational luncheon, and the interior and exterior of a Harlem business. Much of the collection depicts the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Some images are only available as contact sheets. Of note are views of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's speech at the March on Washington; group portraits of civil rights and religious leaders participating in the march at the Lincoln Memorial; and views of the National Council of Negro Women's Brotherhood Luncheon, attended by Mary McLeod Bethune, Eleanor Roosevelt and host Ed Sullivan, at the Hotel Willard, Washington, D.C. (1955).

- Bertrand Miles, 1928-2005, was a photojournalist and freelance photographer. As a young man he worked in Chicago and Atlanta as an assistant to photographer Carl Adair before returning to Chicago to become a freelancer. From 1952 to 1968, Miles was based in New York City, during which time his work appeared in Ebony, Jet, Collier and Life magazines. He also became interested in advertisment photography; photographed the 1963 March on Washington; and served as Nelson Rockefeller's personal photographer during his 1968 presidential campaign. In 1969, Miles stopped doing still photography and worked as a cameraman for CBS News from 1969 to 1977.
