Summary
Depictions of the descendants of the Gullah people residing in South Carolina, specifically on Daufuskie Island, from 1977 to 1982, consisting of posed portraits and candid shots of men, women and children at home, working or attending church; and views of laundry being done, shrimpers, religious services, a boat operator, children walking along a wooded path, and a child riding a ferry. Also included are a view of a kitchen and the exterior of the island's Union Baptist Church.

  • Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1951, is a photographer and civic activist. She has done freelance and photojournalistic work for various journals and clients including Ebony, World Tennis, the United Negro College Fund and Philip Morris. Moutoussamy-Ashe has also published books either featuring her work or about photography, notably "Daufuskie Island: A Photographic Essay" (1982), "Viewfinders: Black Women Photographers, 1839-1985" (1986), and "Daddy and Me: a Photo Story About Arthur Ashe and his Daughter, Camera" (1993), about her late husband tennis great Arthur Ashe and families facing AIDS.
