Depictions of the exteriors of storefront churches and stand-alone structures used as churches in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1986, with views emphasizing the shape of doorways, placement of signage, and the arrangement of architectural features, such as windows, as well as the play of light and shadow on the subject. The churches are small, independent African American Christian churches not affiliated with major denominations.

Biography (note)
  • Donald Eugene Camp, born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1940, is an African American photographer, artist and educator. After working as a photographer for the Philadelphia Evening and Sunday Bulletin (1972-1980), Camp received his BFA (1987) and MFA (1989) in art from Temple University's Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Camp is best known for his ongoing photographic series "Dust Shaped Hearts," consisting of portraits of the human face, notably black men. He also used 19th century non-silver photographic processes, utilizing photosensitized earth pigments, to produce his work. Hired as a photography professor at Ursinus College, Collegeville, Penn., in 2000, Camp retired as professor emeritus in 2012.
