- Depictions of well-known persons of African descent, and lesser-known residents of Harlem, New York, from the mid-1980s to early 1990s, consisting of studio portraits, some possibly used for publicity purposes, of musicians and vocalists Arrested Development, Bobby Brown, Evelyn Champagne King, Jazzie B, Ziggy Marley, and the O'Jays, as well as actor Denzel Washington, journalist Ed Bradley, and feminist/activist Faye Wattleton; candid shots of film director Mario Van Pebbles on the set of "New Jack City" (1990) and director Spike Lee and presidential candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson during a film shoot for a Jackson presidential campaign ad (1988); candid and posed portraits of Harlem residents in their daily lives and attending events and gatherings; and views, in Harlem, of activities in a barbershop, a U.S. Postal Service band relaxing, an abandoned building, a residential street, and the window shaft of a residential building.

- Jeffrey Scales, born in 1954 in San Francisco, California, is an African American photographer. He was given by his father his first camera at age 11; by age 14 Scales had his work published in the Black Panther Party's newspaper and Time Magazine. He has subsequently become a successful editorial, documentary, and commercial photographer, working on record covers, film posters and publicity campaigns. His documentary work, depicting Black communities in the U.S., includes projects on Chicago blues musicians, Black teen gangs in Los Angeles, the lives of young Black men, and a photo series depicting everyday life in Harlem. Scales also served as photo editor for the L.A. Weekly (1979), has been a photography editor for the New York Times since 1998, and an adjunct professor at Tisch School of the Arts of New York University since 2005. Scales and his wife, artist/writer Meg Henson Scales, also own a Harlem-based photo archive and a multimedia company.
