- Summary
- Depictions of social services, recreational activities, and living conditions for African American residents of Harlem, New York, from approximately 1938 to 1939, consisting of individual portraits of men, women and children in art classes and workshops; candid shots and views of children in public school, students in art classes and workshops, patients and staff at medical and dental service facilities, children in a child care center, job applicants in employment centers, social groups for young adults, activities at a swimming pool, dance classes, and nightclub activities; and views of residential structures, storefronts and building fronts, parks, abandoned buildings, and construction projects. Of note are depictions of the Utopia Children's House, the Harlem Community Art Center, the Harlem Health Clinic and the pool at Colonial Park.
- Though not clearly noted, these images were most likely taken by Sid Grossman and Aubrey Pollard for the Photographic Division of the Federal Art Project, sponsored by the Works Progress Administration.

- Most items bear last name of photographers in handwritten headings on recto. All items bear handwritten headings and number notations on recto. Some items have typewritten list of images attached to verso; two items are accompanied by loose typewritten list of images; some items have typewritten caption labels attached to recto. One photograph is detached from mount.
- One item with attached typewritten caption label with handwritten note on verso: "Send to Dr. [Lawrence] Reddick, Schomburg Collection, 135th Street Branch."
- All mounts bear holes near top edge that suggest they were hung for exhibition purposes. Some mounts have missing corners and worn edges.

- Sid Grossman, 1915-1955, and Aubrey Pollard, active circa 1930s, were American photographers who worked for the New York unit of the Photographic Division of the Federal Art Project, sponsored by the Works Progress Administration, during the late 1930s. The Project was a Federal relief program to provide employment for artists and create visual arts programs in local communities. It established photographic divisions to document the work of Federal Art Project artists, activities in art education for children and adults and through community outreach programs, and other Federal One projects, such as the Federal Theater and Music projects. Grossman and Pollard also documented the activities and social conditions of Harlem's African American community.
