Summary
  • Depictions of personalities and events from the American civil rights movement and from the Nation of Islam during the 1960s, consisting of studio portraits and candid shots of civil rights leaders and public figures; views of activists and public figures at events; and views of marches and public gatherings, police activities, court hearings, interviews and funeral rites. A major portion of the collection depicts the life and activities of Nation of Islam spokesman Malcolm X (1963-1965); and events related to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Of note are depictions of Malcolm X addressing a Muslim rally in Camden, New Jersey (1963); views of Malcolm X's funeral in Harlem, New York, and his burial in Ferncliff Cemetery (1965); and views along the route of the Selma march showing participants, law enforcement, and local residents. Other individuals depicted include Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Dick Gregory, Betty Shabazz, Ossie Davis, Elijah Muhammad, Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, Ralph Bunche, and radio personality and King associate Georgie Woods.
  • Also included are views from the Dominican Republic during the United States invasion (1965); views of political exile Robert F. Williams living in Cuba (ca. 1961-1965); and two booklets, one for the Georgie Woods hosted music show "Freedom Show 1965" supporting Dr. King, and a memorial booklet to Dr. King (1968), which both include images by Henry. Henry is depicted in Cuba (ca. early 1960s).

  • Laurence (sometimes spelled Laurance) Henry, 1934-1978, was a Philadelphia-based African American photographer and Baptist minister, who was actively involved in the American civil rights movement of the 1960s. Henry documented prominent figures and activities in the African American communities of Philadelphia and New York; civil rights activities in Alabama, notably the Selma to Montgomery March (1965); and the activities of Minister Malcolm X, including his pilgrimage to Mecca (1964) and his last rites following his death (1965). In 1972, after returning to the Baptist ministry, Henry founded the Christ Community Baptist Church in Philadelphia.

Laurence (sometimes spelled Laurance) Henry, 1934-1978, was a Philadelphia-based African American photographer and Baptist minister, who was actively involved in the American civil rights movement of the 1960s. Henry documented prominent figures and activities in the African American communities of Philadelphia and New York; civil rights activities in Alabama, notably the Selma to Montgomery March (1965); and the activities of Minister Malcolm X, including his pilgrimage to Mecca (1964) and his last rites following his death (1965).
