Summary
  • Depictions of civil rights activities in the American South, specifically the voting rights campaign in Alabama and Mississippi, from 1963 to 1966, consisting of candid shots and group portraits of civil rights leaders and activists; views of participants, local African American and White residents, and law enforcement along march routes; and views of rallies and church gatherings, voter registration drives, police activities, White segregationists, classrooms, and a funeral. A major portion of the collection depicts the third Selma to Montgomery (Ala.) March for Voting Rights (1965). Also of note are views of SNCC activist Willie "Preacher" Shaw urging African Americans to register to vote, in Belzoni, Miss. (1963), a related rally supporting the Council of Federated Organizations president Aaron Henry's mock election bid for governor of Mississippi (1963); and views of a church meeting, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in response to the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, in Birmingham, Ala. (1963).
  • Also included are views of Malcolm X's funeral and burial in New York (1965); and a view of a White Mississippi patrolman trying to grab an American flag away from an African American child during a voting rights protest in Jackson, Miss., an image that later received the 2nd place prize from World Press Photo, in the Photo Stories category (1965). Other individuals depicted include Fanny Lou Hamer, James Baldwin and Stokely Carmichael.

  • Matt Herron, 1931-2020, was an American photojournalist, documentary photographer and social activist, known for his involvement in the civil rights movement in the American South during the 1960s. He was a photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and helped to organize the Southern Documentary Project that documented the rapid social changes occuring in the Deep South. Since the 1980s, Herron had been involved with media photographer organizations, and had lectured on such topics as copyright, electronic image marketing systems, and business practices in photography.

Matt Herron, 1931-2020, was an American photojournalist, documentary photographer and social activist, known for his involvement in the civil rights movement in the American South during the 1960s. He was a photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and helped to organize the Southern Documentary Project that documented the rapid social changes occuring in the Deep South. Since the 1980s, Herron had been involved with media photographer organizations, and had lectured on such topics as copyright, electronic image marketing systems, and business practices in photography.
