- Summary
- Depictions of individuals and activities related mostly to African American Protestant churches, mainly in Los Angeles, California, from 1972 to 1991, consisting of group portraits and views of religious clergy, congregations and followers, choirs, and families; views of religious rites and celebrations, meetings, public activities, and funeral and memorial services; and exterior and interior views of religious structures. Most of the images depict Baptist churches. Some other mainstream Protestant churches, Pentecostals, and Evangelicals are depicted, as well as the American Muslim Mission and the Nation of Islam. Also included are two suburban Los Angeles Protestant churches (1980-1984), and some Baptist churches in rural Louisiana (1982-1991).
- Of note are views of the Reverend Ralph Abernathy attending a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee fund raiser at an unidentified Los Angeles Baptist church (1972); and views of participants at a Nation of Islam rally, with Minister Louis Farrakhan, at the Los Angeles Coliseum (1990).

- Roland Charles, 1938-2000, was a New Orleans-born African American photographer and curator based in Los Angeles. Starting in 1970s, Charles was a successful freelance photographer whose work reflected positive images of Black life, which resulted in his curating the exhibition "Life in a Day of Black L.A. The Way We See It," which included the work of ten Black photographers, that toured Los Angeles and Europe during the 1990s. He also founded the Black Photographers Association of California in 1984, and created the Black Gallery in 1986, an exhibition space in Los Angeles's Crenshaw district. Charles died in Los Angeles in 2000.

- Roland Charles, 1938-2000, was a New Orleans-born African American photographer and curator based in Los Angeles.
