Summary
Depictions of the exterior views of African American church buildings located mostly in Washington, D.C., as well as in Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland, during the mid to late-1980s, consisting mainly of Protestant churches, notably Baptist and Methodist, and one Roman Catholic church. Also depicted is a site marker for the original 19th Street Baptist Church, in Washington, D.C.; and the church sign for the Star-Lite Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois (1981). There are no depictions of building interiors, congregations or church activities.

  • Brian V. Jones, born in 1952 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, is an African American photographer based in Maryland. Starting as a photojournalist for the Black press covering social and political activities, Jones, since 1980, has worked as a documentary photographer covering large scale urban and rural projects around Washington, D.C. and Maryland, Holocaust survivors, and the landscape of Caribbean islands. He has also produced commercial portrait and architectural photography. Jones currently teaches photography at Montgomery College, in Rockville, Maryland.
