Summary
Depictions of persons of African descent from various religious affiliations, mostly in New York City, during the 1970s to 1980s, consisting of candid shots and views of worshipers or congregants attending religious services and rites; candid shots and views of gospel performers at the Apollo Theater in Harlem; and views of funeral rites, ritual dancing, a parade in New Orleans, a religious convention, a Hari Krishna procession, a press conference, street evangelists, and exteriors of Brooklyn, New York, storefront churches. Of note are views of an Akan funeral (1983) and the graduation of an Akan priest (1987) in the Akan community in New York; festival dancers at the Oyotunji Yoruba Village in Sheldon, South Carolina (1981); and the activities of the congregation, specifically deacons, during services at the Progressive Baptist Church, in Brooklyn, New York (1989).

As a photojournalist during the 1970s to 1990s, Nance documented the religious life of African Americans, African spiritual culture in America, the Black Indians of New Orleans, Louisiana, and folk musicians of Appalachia. Since the mid-1990s, Nance has produced films and developed digital web projects as a means of storytelling and giving insight into the lives of the African American community.
