Summary
Depictions of non-traditional African American churches in Houston, Texas, from 1989 to 1990, consisting of exterior views and details of structures used as church buildings, including former businesses and dwellings; views of church signs, including a former movie theater marquee; a statue of a Black Virgin Mary; and the interior of a church revival tent. Church congregants and activities are not depicted; some churches are identified as Baptist or Church of God in Christ.

  • Sunny Nash, born in 1949 in Texas, is an African American photographer, journalist, writer and producer. Raised and educated in Texas, and currently living in Long Beach, California, Nash has been active in the art communities of both locations, and has both written about and produced multiple media projects concerning race relations in the United States. Nash's best known work is her photography project "Shopping for Hope: a Photographic Study of Storefront Churches Across America," started in 1989, and her family memoir "Bigmama Didn't Shop at Woolworth's," published in 1996.

Sunny Nash, born in 1949 in Texas, is an African American photographer, journalist, writer and producer. Raised and educated in Texas, and currently living in Long Beach, California, Nash has been active in the art communities of both locations, and has both written about and produced multiple media projects concerning race relations in the United States.
