Summary
Depictions mainly of religious-themed objects, signage and structures in Harlem, New York, from 1986 to 1988, consisting views of church buildings along 116th Street; a storefront converted into a church; a portrait of Jesus in the headlight of a car; a sign indicating the pending construction of a church; a crooked "Jesus Saves" cross on the side of a building; a prayer or revival tent; a vacant lot used for church parking; a rubble strewn lot with a church in the background; and an abandoned building with a cross-shaped opening in the sealed doorway. Also included are two portraits of a street evangelist and a Jehovah's Witness in Los Angeles, California (1978).

  • Jeffrey Scales, born in 1954 in San Francisco, California, is an African American photographer. He was given by his father his first camera at age 11; by age 14 Scales had his work published in the Black Panther Party's newspaper and Time Magazine. He has subsequently become a successful editorial, documentary, and commercial photographer, working on record covers, film posters and publicity campaigns. His documentary work, depicting Black communities in the U.S., includes projects on Chicago blues musicians, Black teen gangs in Los Angeles, the lives of young Black men, and a photo series depicting everyday life in Harlem. Scales also served as photo editor for the L.A. Weekly (1979), has been a photography editor for the New York Times since 1998, and an adjunct professor at Tisch School of the Arts of New York University since 2005. Scales and his wife, artist/writer Meg Henson Scales, also own a Harlem-based photo archive and a multimedia company.
