- Summary
- Depictions of African American Protestant church buildings in the American South from 1984 to 1987, consisting mainly of exterior views of church buildings, a Masonic temple and a seminary; views of architectural details, such as entrance ways, facades and signage; some interior views of churches; a view of a memorial to fallen civil rights workers; and some candid shots and views of clergy, parishioners and a choir. Some images of parishioners emphasize the interplay between light and dark on the subject. The churches represented are Baptist, United Methodist and African Methodist Episcopal, located in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

- All fine art photographs bear photographer's hand stamp on either the recto or verso of mount board; one color print bears hand stamp on recto.
- All black and white fine art prints bear the photographer's signature and handwritten image capture date, captions, and print run number, mainly on the recto of the mount on both mounted and matted prints. Matted color images repeat signature and handwritten notations on both the recto of mat window and recto of mount; only one color print bears caption on recto.
- 21 x 26 cm print bears copy camera placement stickers on recto, a printed caption label attached to verso, and photo printer's hand stamp on verso. Image is reduced duplicate of fine art print.
- Images form part of a portfolio entitled "On the Altar of Liberty," a photographic study of Black churches that were part of the Civil Rights Movement.

- Carlton Wilkinson is an African American photographer based in Nashville, Tennessee. He has taught photography at Vanderbilt University and the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, and has operated an art gallery and an artist consulting service in Nashville. Wilkinson's work, which includes documentary and conceptual photography, has been exhibited at various museums and galleries throughout Tennessee, as well as the Smithsonian Institution.
