- Summary
- Depictions of individuals, activities and events, particularly of African Americans, related to the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Josephite Fathers, in Baltimore, Maryland from the late 19th century to the 1980s, consisting of studio portraits and candid shots of priests, nuns and seminary students; group portraits of clergy, nuns, Catholic school students, church and school organizations, charity recipients, a football team, and communion and graduation classes; and views of religious services, rites and ceremonies, church-sponsored activities, school classes, and church buildings and properties. Depictions of Society activities in other locations, particularly Louisiana, are limited.
- Of note are studio portraits, and a view of the gravesite, of Father Augustine Tolton who became the first publicly acknowledged African American to be ordained a Catholic priest in 1886.

- Images were originally captured between the late 19th century and the 1980s. This collection was photographically reproduced around 1992 from the Josephite photographic archives in Baltimore, Maryland.
- Some photographs bear photographer's name or photography studio's name on recto. Many items bear handwritten captions on verso; some items bear printed captions on recto. Some items show were church hand stamps and typewritten captions were used on recto. Some images are cropped; panoramic images were reduced to fit on smaller sized paper. Some items are duplicates.
- Some images are accompanied by photocopies of articles, published citations or typewritten chronological biographies.
- Collection contains work by A.P. Badou, J.C. Christhilf, and Markiewicz Photo, among others.
