Summary
  • Depictions of civil rights activist and civic leader Howard Bennett's personal life during the 1920s, and his social and civil rights activities from the late-1960s through the 1970s, consisting of candid shots of children and young adults, who are relatives and friends of Bennett's (1920s); a studio portrait of Bennett in his U.S. Army uniform (ca. 1940s); candid shots and group portraits showing Bennett attending social functions (ca. 1960s-1970s); and views of Bennett attending marches, dedications and various banquets. Bennett's work with labor leader A. Philip Randolph is not depicted; his work with the 369th Veterans Association and the NAACP is not clearly identified.
  • Of note is a view of Bennett participating in a march in Harlem, New York, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (ca. 1969), and attending an unidentified dedication also attended by Coretta Scott King, diplomat Donald H. McHenry and law enforcement official William DeFossett (ca. 1970s). Also depicted are a separate march honoring Dr. King (1974), an undated portrait of Rosa Parks holding a plaque, and views of Niagara Falls, New York (1920s). Other individuals depicted with Bennett include politician/activists Andrew Young, John Lewis and Julian Bond; basketball star Walt Frazier; and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
