- Summary
- Depictions primarily of the political and social activities of journalist and New York City public official Earl Brown from the late-1940s to the mid-1960s, consisting of individual portraits of Brown; group portraits showing Brown with his wife Emma Moseley Brown, and with various public figures at public gatherings, events and political functions; and views of Brown attending receptions, ceremonies, meetings, large assemblies, and a televised discussion. Depictions of Brown's activities as a journalist (ca. 1930s -1940s) are either limited or not clearly identified. Depictions of both Earl's and Emma's personal lives are limited.
- Of note are a group of candid shots of Earl and Emma Brown at home when he won election to the New York City Council (1949); and a reproduced group portrait showing Brown and the staff of his school paper, the Howard Academy Herald (originally captured 1916). Among the individuals depicted with Brown are New York City Mayor Robert Wagner, Manhattan Borough President Edward R. Dudley, New York State Governor Averell Harriman, and President Harry S. Truman. Among the family friends depicted with a young Emma Moseley (ca. 1920s) are composer Harry T. Burleigh and artist Lois Mailou Jones.
