- "The revue de fin d'année was a Parisian tradition that had its origins in the eighteenth century and continued into the twentieth. Toward the end of the calendar year, the managers of the boulevard theaters and their staff writers and composers began constructing elaborate musical shows with many tableaux (changes of scene) and scentic effects that would highlight and parody historical and cultural events of the past year, with the first performace generally taking place toward the middle or end of December ... The present edition makes available the music of the revue de fin d'année for 1857 at the Théâtre des Variétés, Ohé! les p'tits agneaux!, by Théodore Cogniard (the brother of Hippolyte Cogniard, the manager of the Variétés, 1855-69) and Clairville (Louis-François Nicolaïe)."--Page xii.
