- Summary
- Collection primarily depicts events and activities related to March of Dimes official Charles H. Bynum from the 1940s to the 1970s, consisting of individual portraits of Bynum; group portraits showing Bynum with educational and organizational groups; and candid shots and views of Bynum at presentations, banquets, a birthday celebration, a tribute, and reunion. Also included are views of Bynum and his wife on a trip to Europe. Depictions of Bynum's personal life and career as an educator are limited.
- Of note are a photo album and contact sheets depicting "A Salute to Charlie" held at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama (1972); a series of candid shots taken at an undated formal birthday gathering for Bynum; and a group portrait with an infant Bynum and his immediate family (ca. 1905). Among those depicted with Bynum include singer Marion Anderson and polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk.

- Charles Hudson Bynum, 1905-1996, was an African American educator, civil rights activist, and, from 1944 to 1971, director of Interracial Activities for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (later called the March of Dimes) where he worked to ensure that African Americans afflicted with polio would be provided proper treatment and rehibilitative care.
