- Summary
- Album of 108 gelatin silver photographs on 24 card stock leaves, all but one with captions on the mounts in Russian. One photograph signed in the negative by Alexey Aleksandrovich von Friken ("Fon Fricken"). The photographs document Sakhalin Island during its use as a Russian Imperial penal colony and depict prisons and prisoners, prosecutors, exile settlements, fishing and oil extracting operations, towns, and portraits of native people. Some of the subjects have been identified, including notorious executioners Golynsky and Komelev, and Fedor Shirokolobov, a well-known man convicted of murder and sentenced to be attached to a wheelbarrow for ten years. Includes multiple graphic images of an execution and injuries resulting from physical abuse.

- Alexey Aleksandrovich von Friken was a government inspector of agriculture on Sakhalin Island from 1888 to 1905, and supervisor of the meteorological stations there from 1889 to 1897. Despite his amateur status, he opened a photography studio in Alexandrovsk.
