  • Lewis Hine, 1874-1940, was an American sociologist and photographer whose photographic work, particularly with the National Child Labor Committee during the late 1900s to 1910s, contributed to the passage of child labor laws in the United States. A freelance photographer, he documented the social and working conditions of immigrants and workers for the American Red Cross, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Works Progress Administration, as well as the construction of the Empire State Building.
