Summary

• Collection consists mainly of studio portraits of men, women and groups dating from the 1900s to the 1990s, with the bulk of the images from the 1920s to the 1950s, depicting primarily individuals of African descent, some of them well known. Also included are candid portraits mostly of African Americans at events, at home and outdoors; as well as portraits of persons not of African descent who were connected to events or news stories affecting the global Africana community. Many of the identified photos were probably used for publication purposes. Portraits are arranged alphabetically by names of individuals with portraits of couples, families, unidentified group portraits and oversize portraits filed at the end. Unidentified individual portraits are arranged chronologically by decade and are filed by gender. Nineteenth century original presentation formats are filed separately.
