- Summary
- Their Children Learned was a Black History Month special that aired over the course of three nightly news broadcasts on New York City's WNBC-TV in 1983. The Their Children Learned WNBC Black History Special collection consists of forty-two video recordings which include the three original broadcast segments, as well as unedited interviews, outtakes, and archival footage and audio used in the special. Hosted by anchor John Hambrick (June 21, 1940 – September 10, 2013), the three segments focused on Black American history through archival footage, contemporary recordings, and interviews with local contributors to Black history and culture. The first broadcast segment provided an overview of the progression from Negro History Week to Black History Month, and the concurrent developments in the struggle for civil rights. The second and third segments were devoted to the historical impacts of the Black church and Black music, respectively.
