- Summary
- Collection consists of studio portraits of African American lesbian writer, educator and feminist Cheryl Clarke, including a contact sheet of images taken during the same photography session (1983); and a photographic reproduction of the group portrait of Black student leaders from Douglass College, New Brunswick, New Jersey, used for the cover of Clarke's book "After Mecca: Women Poets and the Black Arts Movement" (2005). Depictions of Clarke's personal life and her career as a writer, educator and activist are not included.

- Cheryl L. Clarke, born in 1947 in Washington, D.C., is a lesbian poet, essayist, educator and a Black feminist community activist. Clarke's work focuses on African-American women's literature, black lesbian feminism, and the Black Arts Movement in the United States. Clarke is the author of five collections of poetry; and had published "After Mecca: Women Poets and the Black Arts Movement" (2005), a study of the contributions of Black women to a field that traditionally recognized Black men, and "Days of Good Looks: Prose and Poetry, 1980-2005" (2006), a collection of published writing. Clarke has also served on the editorial collective of Conditions, an early lesbian publication; and has been published in numerous anthologies, periodicals and newspapers.
